Change Management

4 steps to ensure change and adoption

HCMWorks believes there are 4 critical steps to ensure a smooth transition in changing existing processes and successful adoption by end users.  These steps include:

  1. Expect Resistance
  2. Explain “Why?”
  3. Track Behavior and Measure Results
  4. Stay ahead of the Resistance

1.  Expect Resistance

Human beings inherently resist change; we are creatures of habit.  Therefore, any implementation of changes have to take into account the natural resistance of end users.

2.  Explain “Why?”

Once end users realize how their actions will benefit their department–and ultimately, their company as a whole–they are more likely to modify their behavior than if it changes are simply presented as company mandates.

3.  Track Behavior and Measure Results

“ That which cannot be monitored cannot be measured.”  This statement holds especially true for managing changes within the procure-to-pay process.  Build in specific quantitative and qualitative measurement points, and consistently track the results back to the expected results.

4.  Stay Ahead of the Resistance

The best defense is a good offense.  As an executive sponsor of category procurement process changes, maintain a “pulse” on the organization’s end users.  Are they engaged, active, and following the processes?   Make sure to have mechanisms in place to offer regular communication and opportunities to solicit feedback from end users to ensure adoption.
